In the midst of the growing food crisis resulting from the pandemic and rising inflation, one in five Canadians are now accessing community food programs to make ends meet. In Toronto’s downtown east, Fred Victor is responding to this surge in demand for food through their Food Security Program. This program provides free, nutritious, culturally relevant meals, and other necessary support to people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty as well as people living on the edge, on fixed incomes or social assistance, working at minimum wage, seniors, students, and large, multi-generational families.
